Grand River Cellars is located in the heart of the Grand River Valley Wine Region. Located on the border of Thompson and Madison, it benefits from the air drainage located in the higher lands of Thompson passing over the flat lands of the vineyards and flowing down into the Grand River Valley basin. With its cool winters and warm summers, grape production is often at its premium allowing for production of premium varietal wines.
The effects from Lake Erie also work to extend the growing season. Grape production began in 2006 with the planting of four acres of Vidal Blanc grapes out by the road. Other grapes used for wine production are purchased from our sister winery, Debonne Vineyards.
Grand River Cellars prides itself in producing quality wines from grapes grown in the Grand River Valley Wine Region. Its Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Grigio all benefit from the care taken in the vineyard to produce a quality Ohio wine. Specialty wines include Merlot Reserve, Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, and Chardonnay Reserve.
The wines have received prestigious awards including the Director of Agricultures Award for the Best Dessert Wine in the State for Grand River Cellars 2005 Vidal Blanc Ice Wine; Director of Agricultures Award for the Best White Wine in the State for Grand River Cellar 2006 Chardonnay; Best Red in the State for the Cabernet Franc plus a multitude of Gold and Double Gold awards for the other wines
